Lincoln Park Zoo Lights

06 January 2014

Happy Monday, friends! How did you spend the weekend?

James and I enjoyed the last days of vacation sleeping in, watching movies, and finally going to the Lincoln Park Zoo lights (spiked hot cocoa in hand, of course).

I'm glad we went when we did because it is now officially closed for the season, closing a day early due to the crazy cold weather we're getting in Chicago.

Holiday traditions

23 December 2013
One of the things James and I have really enjoyed since getting married last year is creating special holiday traditions. Some of our favorites are below. (Not pictured: spiking hot cocoa at the Lincoln Park Zoo lights, watching Christmas movies, and listening to copious amounts of Christmas music)

Baking Chirstmas cookies. We actually started this tradition before we got married, but each year, the cookies look at little better. They also make for great gifts, so I usually package them up in a pretty Christmas-y tin to give away.

Making a gift for friends and family. Last year it was the hot cocoa mixes and this year, homemade body scrub.

Decking out our little home. We're slowly building up our arsenal of Christmas decorations and special pieces we hope to keep for years, like these personalized stockings.

Our Christmas card. It will look different each year as we get older and our family grows, but we love sending out a card from our little family every Christmas.

Easy DIY Body Scrub

16 December 2013
Just in time for the holidays, I have an easy do-it-yourself gift idea for you! Last year's hot cocoa mix gifts (here) were so fun to make, I wanted to make something again this Christmas for our friends and family.
I love a good body scrub and best of all, this all-natural recipe can be made with everyday items from your kitchen.

Other than the recipe ingredients (below), all you need is a small glass jar (here), gift tags (mine were from Marshall's, but these printable tags would be perfect), and ribbon - I paired green velvet with a shimmery gold from Michael's.

Below is the "recipe" for your body scrub - all you have to do is mix all ingredients in a large bowl and divide among the jars. To fill 10 small jars, I recommend making 2-3 batches.

DIY Body Scrub Recipe
Makes 1 batch

2 cups coarse salt (or sugar)
3/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tbsp. honey

Gifts for the Kids

04 December 2013
I love giving gifts and especially love buying for and giving gifts to my little sister. There's nothing more fun than seeing the joy on the face of a little one when she opens a gift.

Below are goodies for the kiddos on your shopping list. I'm particularly excited about the GoldieBlox game (here), which I am giving to my sister. The company helps girls discover the world of engineering through construction games and offers girls other toy options than the typical pink-and-frilly fare.

You can read more about GoldieBlox here and check out their awesome "Princess Machine" commercial below!

Gifts that give back

27 November 2013
With Christmas right around the corner, I have started - and started crossing off - my shopping lists for friends and family.

I really like the idea of buying a gift someone will love and that donates to charitable causes.

Have you started your holiday shopping yet? Have any great gift ideas that give back?

Christmas cards

15 November 2013
It's that time of year - time to order cards for the holidays! Because I just can't help myself, I ordered ours early (again) and from Minted (again) this year. I still love our design from last year (see it here), but I couldn't resist minimalist golden "peace" design this year.

Will you be sending cards out this season? If so, what are some of your favorite designs and messages for the holidays?

fourth of july treats

08 July 2013
i'm back from a mini-vacation up in door county with j's family. it was so nice to be on the lake, beautiful weather, and i even got in two technology-free days, which was so refreshing. james and i periodically go full days without our phones, computers, TVs, etc., a new habit borne out of my intentions for 2013. you quickly realize how much you can get done without all the distractions: i read 100+ pages of my book, got major quality time in with j's family, and appreciated the beautiful lake view when there was a lull in conversation instead of checking my email/twitter/instagram/etc.

for our big family dinner, i wanted to bring something that would transport easily from chicago and that would be festive. i picked up supplies to make white wine sangria (recipe below!), strawberry and blueberry skewers, and made rice krispie treats topped with red, white, and blue sprinkles. easy peasy and they were a big hit.

happy new year!

happy new year, dear readers! i hope the holidays were wonderful and that you're looking forward to the start of a new year!

james and i had so much fun celebrating our first Christmas as mr. and mrs., starting with our own gift exchange in chicago, seeing the lights at the lincoln park zoo with cocoa in hand, and wrapping presents for our families together.

we went up to wisconsin for a quick day trip to see his mom's side of the family, then flew down to austin to see mine. in austin, my sister and i made bracelets for operation: friendship for newtown and the adults went to see les miserables. i still can't get over how amazing the film was. go see it! we flew back to chicago and drove up to door county, wi to celebrate with everyone else. it was a whirlwind trip, but i'm happy to report, we got to see all of our immediate family and then some, which is a feat!

as i referenced in my post on NYE, i am looking forward with optimism to the start of a new year, heartened and inspired by the goodness i have seen in others. while i haven't finalized my resolutions, i am resolved to make 2013 as positive and purposeful as i can.

have you made any resolutions for the new year?

DIY: hot cocoa mix gifts

18 December 2012

as promised, i made one of the DIY sweet treat gifts i posted last week and i'm so excited to share it with you. i made rhiannon's hot cocoa mix, with a few changes to the decorations. if you don't know rhi or her beautiful blog, hey gorgeous, click over right away! rhi is an insanely talented wedding designer/planner with impeccable taste and just today relaunched her company.

she handcrafts so many special elements for her clients' weddings and does all the floral design herself, and what i love most is how much she genuinely cares about her clients and creating a memorable, unique day for them.

oh, and her DIYs and crafts are so very lovely, which is why i bookmarked this cocoa mix tutorial months ago!

this DIY makes for great favors or gifts for the holidays - it's easy to make and fun to share!

hop over to hey gorgeous for step-by-step directions, but really, all you need is cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, peppermint bark squares, mini bailey's (or kahlua) bottles, ribbon, and a fabric of your choice.

fill each jar with an equal amount of cocoa, place two squares of peppermint bark in each, and top with 'mallows. for the fabric, cut a circle about 1 inch larger in diameter than the opening of your jar. place fabric circle over the opening and seal the lid.

and as you can see, there are lots of ways to pretty up you jars. i opted for classic red and white striped fabric and red, silver, and gold bows as toppers. and for our family members of age, a mini bottle of baileys tied with glitter ribbon.

pink and gold gift ideas

12 December 2012
i have a few Christmas gifts left to buy and maybe it was the pink treats yesterday, but i can't get pretty pink and gold gift ideas out of my head.

i mean, how lovely would it be to see this body scrub in your shower? or to eat dessert on this plate? the combination is so feminine and lovely! i know it's not a traditional holiday color scheme, but you know how i feel about pink.

the sweetest holiday treats

11 December 2012
i love the idea of making a sweet treat for loved ones during the holiday season. not to get all philosophical on you, but food nourishes the body and the act of sharing food can nourish the soul, so to me, there's something particularly special about preparing food for someone.

especially when said food is decorated or wrapped with care. it feels more like a gift if the presentation is pretty, don't you think?

i'll be making rhi's hot cocoa mix next weekend, so stay tuned for pics!

our tree

27 November 2012

i mentioned yesterday that i like a Christmas tree with sparkle and shine and since we just finished putting up ours this weekend, i wanted to share it with you!

also, i am inordinately excited about our new monogrammed fur stockings! i wanted to get a cute ornament to celebrate our first Christmas as mr. and mrs., but they were all so cheesy. like barftastic cheesy - and that's coming from me, a total sap. i picked out these beauties from restoration hardware baby & child and they are perfect.

and side note, can we talk about how awesome children's lines are these days? i'm thinking of land of nod, pottery barn teen, RH baby & child...

trimming the tree with sparkle

25 November 2012
i'm a fan of sparkle any time of the year, but it's a must for the holidays!

one of my favorite ways to incorporate a little sparkle into the season is our Christmas tree. we decorate with glitter, metallic, and sequin ornaments, garland, and lights. there's something magical about a shimmering tree, don't you think?
