"a llama keeps watch at machu picchu" by thomas wells via national geographic
i remember writing a book report on the incan empire, one of the largest empires in pre-columbian america, in 3rd grade and being interested in the country since. i'd like to visit my mom's birthplace and get a little closer to my own history.
lima
lima is the capital of peru and in addition to being the cultural and architectural center of the country, it is known for having some pretty phenomenal food. there is a melting pot of cultures in the area and the food is a reflection of that, with asian, european, and traditional andean influences. check out this restaurant guide and if you go, make sure to try the signature dish of the region - ceviche. it's delicious!
cusco
the cusco (or "cuzco") region is home to the incan lost city of machu picchu, which is one of the new 7 wonders of the world. the incas built the citadel in a remote area that was never discovered during the spanish conquest, so fortunately, it was preserved.
have you ever been in peru? or visited your parent's birthplace? i'd love to hear about it!

I've always wanted to go to Machu Picchu - it would be such an unbelievable experience! Hopefully some day you'll be able to go :)

I love that you did a post on this because South America is awesome and it's just now getting more buzz, I feel like. I haven't been to Peru yet but Argentina and Chile are amazing. Go!
My husband and I have a good friend who has done the ex-pat thing for a while and lives in Iquitos! He fell in love with a Peruvian woman, made a baby and have been living the family live for a few years now - amazing, right?
Peru is definitely at the top of my list! My husband and I would love to visit Machu picchu!
To be honest I know very little about Peru other than it's home to Machu Picchu, but it looks beautiful! My mum was born in London and came to Canada when she was five. Sadly, I've yet to visit my family there but it's at the top of my list!

My mom's best friend grew up in Peru and my parents and my little brother have all visited more than once–but somehow, I never got my butt on a plane! I'm hoping to join her the next time she takes a group to Machu Picchu!
